Senator Nelson Carries Bill to Save Texas Lives
Our hats go off to Senator Nelson who has championed the adoption of AEDs for more than two decades. Many lives across the state have been saved by the provisions of her 1999 legislation, and many more will be saved by Senate Bill 199.
Senator Nelson filed SB 199 in November of last year. She ushered it through the Texas Senate and worked with Representative Four Price to move the legislation through the Texas House. The bill passed both chambers with unanimous, bipartisan support.
This morning, Senator Nelson reiterated the importance of the bill, saying "AEDs are easy to use and can save a life when seconds count. SB 199 encourages more people to help their fellow Texans when experiencing medical emergencies by extending liability protections. These Good Samaritans should be applauded — not penalized."
Many industry groups were supportive of the legislation, including the American Heart Association, the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association, the Texas Restaurant Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Dental Association.
