Dugan Saved at Youth Rodeo
VICTORIA, TX - Dugan Chandler is a rodeo champ. At 17 years of age, he and his horse, Bugs, have won 150 belt buckles and 10 saddles.
Dugan started last year’s rodeo season at an event in Belville, Texas. He watched his friends ride and then took his turn. After exiting the chute, he successfully roped and tied the calf. Moments later, he suffered Cardiac Arrest while still atop Bugs. He slumped over, and Bugs stood still.
Bystanders sprang into action, initiating CPR and retrieving an AED that one of the bystanders had in their personal vehicle. The AED administered two shocks, successfully restarting Dugan’s heart. Dugan was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann in Houston.
Data was pulled from the AED to determine the best long-term treatment for Dugan, and after reviewing the electrical activity present in Dugan’s chest before shocks were administered, doctors determined he needed an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. That device was installed, and Dugan was able to return home with the peace of mind that any future cardiac arrest will be addressed immediately by the defibrillator in his chest.
Dugan’s entire medical team had graduated from Duke University, and as Dugan applied to colleges last year, they inspired him to apply to Duke… He was accepted, and he will be headed to Durham this Fall!
